Abstract: |
A 1.2ha extension to Jackdaw Crag limestone quarry was subject to an archaeological strip, map and record excavation. This followed phases of geophysical survey and evaluation suggesting the presence of a Roman agricultural landscape with settlement activity that continued to be developed and exploited into the early to mid-Roman period, perhaps with origins in the later Iron Age. Much of the site appears to relate to a series of ditched field boundaries and trackways, indicative of an agricultural landscape, while the far east of the site had some evidence of occupation with a small enclosure, isolated post-holes and pits. Dating of features was hindered by the recovery of only a small pottery assemblage, though all were dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. A single inhumation was also excavated, later radiocarbon dated to the 2nd to 3rd century AD. |
