Abstract:
The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 12 trenches, each proposed to measure 30m by 1.8m. Due to on-site constraints, three trenches were shortened, giving the ‘as-dug’ trench numbers and dimensions: • 10no. 30m x 1.8m trenches; • 1no. 26m x 1.8m trench; • 1no. 15m x 1.8m trench; and • 1no. 27m x 1.8m trench. The trenches were placed to test geophysical anomalies and to provide a representative sample of the remainder of the site. Trench 1, 2, and 6 were shortened due to site constraints and Trenches 5, 7 and 11 were slightly realigned due to site constraints, with the approval of the curator. In September 2021, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation on land to the west of Wheelers Lane, Canford Magna, Dorset. A total of 12 trenches were excavated, revealing 21 ditch features. Whilst the exact function of the ditches remains unclear, they are likely to relate to land management, drainage or division. A single flint artefact may suggest a prehistoric presence and one ditch, represented within three of the trenches, produced modern material. The majority of the ditches remained undated.
