Abstract:
In order to investigate the archaeological potential of a proposed new residential development located at 52a - 56 High Street, Watford, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of targeted trial trenching. Three trial trenches were excavated within the area of the proposed new building. Five shallow parallel ditches of likely post-medieval date were investigated in Trench 3, in the southern corner of the site, all running north-east - south-west. An assortment of finds was recovered from each of these features, which included two sherds of early medieval calcite-gritted ware of 10th - 12th century date and two sherds of medieval pottery of 12th - 14th century date, which are likely to be residual. A small pit, cut into the subsoil, was also investigated in Trench 3. Its fill contained post-medieval material. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were recorded in either of the other two trenches. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risks that groundworks for the proposed new-build development might disturb archaeological remains of any significance, may be considered to be Low for all periods except the post-medieval and modern where the risk may be considered to be High. Post-medieval and modern features are considered to be of minor or negligible significance only.
