Abstract: |
In order to investigate the archaeological potential of a proposed new development site located at The Node, Hitchin Road, Codicote, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of targeted trial trenching. Eleven trial trenches were excavated across the site, focussing on the areas of greatest potential impact. The trenches revealed natural silty clay and gravel, overlain with subsoil and topsoil in places. The natural was overlain in some areas by overburden between 0.3m and 0.55m thick. Features dating to the post-medieval period were revealed in Trenches 5 and 6, in the southeast quarter of the site, under the current car park. These included brick wall foundations and a brick floor, associated with 19th and 20th century glasshouses. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might disturb archaeological remains of any significance may be considered to be Low for all periods except the post-medieval period where the risk may be considered to be High. Although post-medieval features are common, the relationship of those features to any documented sources means that they should be considered locally to be of Moderate significance. |
