Abstract: |
In response to a condition placed on the planning permission for development at Elms Farm, 57 High Street, Barkway, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developer to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks. It was considered that the present investigation had the potential to contribute to an understanding of the origins and development of the settlement at Barkway. The archaeological monitoring of the site revealed three parallel wall foundations, one of brick and two of flint cobble construction. The brick wall appears to date to the late 18th/early 19th C. The walls were demolished before the late 19th century. A late post-medieval pit and a drain were subsequently cut into the demolition backfill. These features were then sealed by the topsoil for the modern garden. No features, deposits or artefacts of earlier than late post-medieval date were revealed. |
