Abstract:
In order to investigate the archaeological potential of a proposed residential development site at the former Builder's Yard, Perrywood Lane, Watton-at-Stone, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developers to undertake two stages of investigation. These comprised field evaluation by trial trenching and the monitoring of all the development groundworks. The archaeological fieldwork on the present site has demonstrated considerable modern disturbance, including 20th century backfilling of the moat and previous ground reduction across the site, which is likely to have removed evidence for activity within the suggested south-eastern enclosure. The line of a north-east to south-west aligned linear feature was exposed in the northern half of the site. This may mark the site of an earlier south-eastern arm to the north-western enclosure, or an internal division of the island, which appears to have been backfilled in the early post-medieval period. Alternatively, this may mark the true site of the south-eastern arm of the moat. No other archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered during the course of the investigation.
