Abstract: |
In response to a planning condition on the construction of a proposed new self-contained annexe at 91 Church Street, Shillington, Bedfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. A previous Heritage Statement had demonstrated a Low potential for encountering evidence of prehistoric and Iron Age date on the site, increasing to moderate for the Roman and Saxon periods, and to high for the medieval, post-medieval and modern periods. Cartographic evidence revealed that buildings were located on the site from at least 1817. Monitoring of the groundworks revealed that the former outbuilding had been terraced into the natural slope. A single feature was encountered crossing one footings trench, which may represent an internal partition within the demolished structure, which had subsequently been deliberately backfilled prior to the laying of the modern concrete surface. No features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance were observed during the course of this work. |
