Abstract: |
In October 2012 an archaeological watching brief was carried out within a field to the immediate southwest of Padbury as part of the installation of an electric cable route running from Steeple Claydon to Buckingham. A 0.30m wide by 120m long trench was excavated joining one over ground section to another. The trench was cut through topsoil straight into the natural geology in which was found nine archaeological features. Owing to the narrowness of the trench it was impossible to accurately classify these features however four were tentatively identified as ditches and one as a pit. Four of the features contained pottery dated to the 1st century BC or 1st century AD i.e. Late Iron Age to Early Roman period. This is representative of a substantial amount of archaeological remains present within this field and of a date which indicates the activity is likely to relate to the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Norbury Camp within the field immediately to the west. |
