Abstract:
Evaluation: The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 14 trenches (Phase 1 10 no.30m x 1.8m; Phase 2 4 no. 30m x 1.8m). Excavation: One excavation area was opened within the site measuring c. 0.30ha. The excavation area was located to investigate features recorded by the previous trial trench evaluation. Evaluation: The first phase of an archaeological evaluation at Folly Farm, Warminster, Wiltshire was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in January 2020, with the second Phase undertaken in August 2020. Fourteen trenches were excavated. Archaeological features were concentrated within three trenches in the eastern part of the site, with evidence recovered indicative of the edge of settlement, which recovered pottery firmly dated to the 11th-13th centuries. A number of ditches of varying size were excavated along with possible quarry pits. A possible hearth was also noted, and a series of postholes, the most substantial of which contained large packing stones and a near complete pottery vessel. It can be tentatively suggested that this occupation activity is related to the medieval settlement of Bugley, which was located within the vicinity of the site but has never been identified archaeologically. Excavation: Between January and February 2021, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological excavation (of land) at Folly Farm, Folly Lane, Warminster, Wiltshire. An area of 0.3ha was excavated. Within the northern half of the site was a rectangular field enclosure. Only three sides of this enclosure were within the excavation area, with the eastern side outside of the scope of works. This enclosure consisted of two phases of use, dated to the medieval period. An undated, but likely contemporary oven was also recorded on the southern edge of this enclosure. A total of six other discrete features was also excavated. The pottery and environmental evidence suggest relatively short-lived usage, dated to the 11th to 12th century. It is likely that domestic scale food production and preparation was undertaken within a settlement in reasonably close proximity to the site but outside the scope of these works. One of the discrete features, pit 1017, on the northern edge of the boundary ditches contained a pottery dump dated to the medieval period. Within the southern boundary of the field system a second dump of pottery, again containing medieval pottery, was found within ditch section 1021. Within the southern half of the excavation area a large number of modern postholes were noted, and several were investigated. The medieval settlement of Bugley has been suggested to lie c. 400m north of the current site. It is likely that the features found within this excavation represent peripheral activity associated with this settlement.
