Abstract:
Allen Archaeology Limited were commissioned to undertake an archaeological watching brief for a housing development on land adjacent to Lea Fields Farm, Hadley Street, Yoxall in Staffordshire. The development area covers approximately 1.9ha of former pasture and situates north of the village core. The area has some archaeological potential. There is limited evidence of prehistoric or roman actives within one kilometre of the site and are mainly concentrated to single finds spots which includes two Bronze Age cremation urns, a roman coin and brooch. Yoxall is a medieval merge of smaller property groupings. There is more evidence from this period although mainly restricted to farming activities in form of field boundaries and ridge and furrow systems. Yoxall's post medieval history can be seen in the many Grade II listed buildings spread around the village. A previous geophysical survey identified the potential for medieval furrows on site. The watching brief proved to be archaeologically negative and has shown that the development has had no impact on the buried archaeological resource of the area.
