Abstract:
Lincs Design Consultancy Ltd commissioned Allen Archaeology Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on land adjacent to Westview, Main Road, Welton le Marsh, Lincolnshire, as a condition of planning consent for a residential development. The site is located in an area of archaeological interest, with Bronze and Roman finds recorded nearby. The village is known to have been well established in the medieval period and possible medieval earthworks in the immediate vicinity of the site indicate settlement and agricultural activity. Archaeological watching briefs in the village have recorded boundary ditches and pottery of 13th to 15th century date. The evaluation methodology entailed the excavation of two trenches, one measuring 15m by 1.8m (Trench 1) and one measuring 10m by 1.8m (Trench 2). Trench 1 was located at the north end of the site, over the area of the proposed new dwelling, whilst Trench 2 was located at the southeast corner of the proposed development over the proposed garage location. Trench 1 exposed medieval ditches marking a boundary with a metalled surface to the east, all dating to the 13th to 17th centuries. Trench 2 exposed the continuation of the ditches in Trench 1 and additional ditches and pits to the east that produced finds of a similar date (13th to 15th century), but were of a different orientation, suggesting more than one phase of activity. The evaluation results suggest this area has significant archaeological potential, and the proposed development is likely to impact upon this archaeological resource.
