Abstract:		 A strip, map and record excavation was undertaken by Archaeological Services Durham University on land at Durranhill, Carlisle between February and April 2018. Five areas were excavated with a total area of 0.97ha; two large areas on the brow of the hill and three smaller areas surrounding this. A substantial ditch was identified; this is undated but is cut by a pit thought to be of prehistoric date. A large number of pits were identified around the hilltop. On artefactual and environmental evidence these appear to date from variously the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and possibly early medieval periods.A rectangular grid of ditches containing Roman pottery covered all areas, and an isolated cremation in a Roman vessel was identified. Full analysis and publication of the data has been recommended.
