Abstract:
Between June and August 2016, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of a block of land at the site of the former Rugby Radio Station that has been designated for Key Phase 2 of the Rugby Sustainable Urban Extension. The evaluation, which was commissioned by Urban and Civic through CgMs Consulting, their archaeological consultants, formed part of a programme of archaeological investigation of the site that had been required by a condition attached to planning consent for the development by Rugby Borough Council. The remains of an Iron Age agricultural ditch system were identified on a spur of high ground in the central part of the site; pottery from one of the ditches suggest that it may have been established as early as the Middle Iron Age and continued in use until the Late Iron Age. Undated ditches in the vicinity predated the establishment of the medieval open field system so are likely to have formed part of this ditch system, although a Roman date for some of the features cannot be discounted. The ditch system would have been located in the agricultural hinterland of the Iron Age and Roman settlements to the south and east of the site and is likely to have been used to control the access of livestock to the meadows along Clifton Brook. The remains of the medieval open field system were evident across much of the site in the form of generally well-preserved ridge and furrow earthworks. Other features included seven large, deep, vertically-sided pits of uncertain date and function, post-Enclosure field boundaries and the remains of a modern, brick-built farm building.
