Abstract:
The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of eight stepped trenches to reach the geological natural. Due to deep alluvial and humic layers 4.2m width trenches were excavated to 1m in depth with an additional central 2m width trench excavated in the center of the wider trench to reach the geological horizon. Overburden was stripped from the trenches by a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless grading bucket. All machining was conducted under archaeological supervision to the top of the natural substrate, or the level in which archaeological features were first encountered. In June 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation at Brightwell Hall Farm. A total of eight trenches were excavated on the c.0.74 hectare proposed development area. Deep stratigraphy was present on site with depths up to 2.2m present at the western side of the development. The layers comprised multiple humic peat type deposits, colluvial layers and flood deposits with no finds. A small burnt mound spread was discovered at the north-west of the proposed development along with a small post-medieval ditch. Modern and post-medeival material was also discovered within the topsoil layers and within made ground deposits present at the eastern side of the area.
