Abstract:
When the lidar data for land within South Gloucestershire and close to the River Severn were visualised, interesting features were identified in a field next to Bilsham Farm, Pilning, South Gloucestershire. This difference triggered a historical review of the site undertaken at the Gloucestershire archives. In parallel, geophysical surveys, both resistivity and gradiometry, were undertaken on the site together with a small soil depth probing investigation When the lidar data for land within South Gloucestershire and close to the River Severn were visualised, interesting features were identified in a field next to Bilsham Farm, Pilning, South Gloucestershire. Although the surfaces of the surrounding fields are covered with ridge-and-furrow earthworks, the undulations in the field under investigation are completely different in character. This difference triggered historical and archaeological research activities into those fields. Research into the history of Bilsham, now Bilsham Farm, showed records for the location since the Boundary Charter for Olveston of A.D. 955 – 959. The parcel of land is a detached part of Westbury Parish, surrounded by lands of Henbury Parish. Geophysical surveys, both resistivity and gradiometry, were carried out on the site. These identified puzzling results with a wide, high resistance boundary around a potential enclosure. No dating evidence was recorded.
