Abstract:
The field evaluation comprised the mechanical excavation of 15 trenches, 12 of which were 30m in length and 3 being 20m in length. Excavation was by a 5 tonne excavator equipped with a 1.60m wide ditching bucket. Mechanical excavation was used to remove topsoil and subsoil to the uppermost archaeological horizon or geological horizon under direct archaeological supervision. The machine excavation was used only for the removal of non-archaeologically significant material. Archaeological deposits and features revealed were then cleaned by hand and recorded at an appropriate level. Archaeological features had written, drawn and photographic records made of them, and all deposits and features were assigned individual context numbers. All artefacts were collected and retained, and analysed by specialists. The evaluation has confirmed that the proposed development at this site is likely to impact on significant archaeological remains concentrated in Field 3. The earthworks visible on past aerial photography, coupled with the geophysical survey already showed this field to have a high potential for archaeological remains and this has been proven through the trenching within this field. The linear features noted within the evaluation trenches are potentially mostly field enclosures, but the large feature seen in Trenches 14 & 15, which was picked up in the geophysical survey might be a property boundary. The pottery remains from Trench 13, along with the quern fragment, indicate there is potential for the site to have been occupied from as early as the middle iron-age period. The pottery remains from Trench 15, along with the bone needle, also suggest the site was occupied in the early medieval period. Aerial photography shows the ridge and furrow system in the two fields containing Trenches 1-8 running in a NE-SW direction. In the lower part of Field 3 the ridge and furrow runs in a NW-SE direction. Features uncovered in these fields correspond well with aerial photography and there is little of archaeological significance within these first two fields. The scant pottery remains and lack of other dating evidence in Field 3 leave us unable to place an accurate date on many of the features investigated. It is therefore considered that further investigation to understand the nature and date of the site in Field 3 would be needed before any further development works that would be likely to impact to the geology could take place.
