Abstract: |
A total of 8 evaluation trenches measuring 10m x 1.8m were opened by mechanical excavator on and around the 'footprint' of the proposed new swimming pool within the grounds of the Freemen's School. The study site was located immediately north-west of the present Sports Hall and 306m south-east from St Giles' church. It lay outside of the attendant AHAP for the latter site. A single, possible posthole or pit [18] was located in the northern end of Trench 1 which cut the drift geology of clay-with-flints. Its fill, [17] contained several fragments of burnt flit but no dating material. The remaining trenches were all machined own to their archaeological horizon being either the afore-mentioned clay-with-flints or the underlying Upper Chalk. No other archaeological features were located. |
