Abstract: |
Documentary research including Cumbria archives, HER consultation, fieldwork and photography on-site followed by written report containing history, description and significance assessment St Bartholomew’s Church is a Grade II* listed building, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. There was a chapel on this site from at least the C16. The present church was built in 1892-3 to designs by Paley & Austin, in 'free Perpendicular style'; the plan is similar to St Peter's at Field Broughton by the same firm. Rev James Harrison initiated the building of the new church and also built other structures to the parish including the 1915 lychgate. The church has high importance for architectural and historic significance; the interior is important for the intact joinery made by local craftsmen. The burial ground has archaeological potential for earlier buildings and burials. The rural setting is important to the significance of this church. |
