Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation carried out by Archaeology South-East at Land at Downsview Avenue, Storrington, West Sussex between 6th and 12th April 2021. The fieldwork was commissioned by Croudace Homes Ltd in advance of residential development of the site and its necessary services. The evaluation uncovered limited evidence of early prehistoric remains, with a small number of lithic artefacts recovered as residual material in later features. Middle Iron Age ditches and pits were recorded along with Late Iron Age/early Roman postholes. A number of undated ditches and postholes probably relating to either of these periods was also recorded across the site. A small quantity of pottery from each period was recovered from the features. The pottery suggests two fairly short-lived phases of activity during each of the Middle Iron Age and Late Iron Age/early Roman periods. Many features located on higher ground were shallow, suggesting that the upper areas of the site have undergone a degree of plough damage. The location of the site close is close to a section of the Hardham to Barcombe Mills Roman road which leads to Stane Street just to the west.. These roads are considered to be of local significance, perhaps developing in response to increasing economic and agricultural intensification of the area, and linking with wider networks via the Sussex Greensand way (Margary 1965, 186). A single post-medieval ditch is recorded, which in on alignment with a field boundary noted on the 1st Edition OS Map of 1876 An archaeological evaluation was carried out on Land at Downsview Avenue, Storrington in advance of residential development of the site.
