Abstract:
In March 2011 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried an archaeological 'strip, map and record' investigation at No.15 High Street, Stanwell, Staines, Surrey (NGR TQ 0561 7428). The investigation was funded by Timoshonco Engineering UK Ltd and was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the demolition of the existing building and the erection of a two-storey building to provide six residential units with car parking spaces, garden amenity space and refuse/recycling storage facilities. The site is located on the northern frontage of the High Street, within the historic settlement of the village. Previous archaeological investigations on the site have revealed Bronze Age and medieval remains. The site had a potential for further remains, in particular those of medieval date related to the occupation of the street frontage. In the event, the 'strip, map and record' investigation revealed a large, late medieval (15th century) pit, two or possibly three late 18th/19th century soakways and two undated pits. The excavation did not reveal an extension of the earlier medieval features found within the northern part of the site during the previous investigations. This may have been due to truncation of the area associated with the construction of the building which had been recently demolished.
