Abstract:
In November 2017 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out an archaeological trial trench evaluation at Reed Chapel, Church Lane, Reed, Hertfordshire SG8 8AJ (NGR TL 36111 36027; Figs.1 - 2). The evaluation was required to provide further information in support of an application, prior to its determination, for the proposed residential conversion/demolition and extension of Reed Chapel (NHDC Ref. 16/01218/1PRE). The evaluation was required based on the advice of Hertfordshire County Council Historic Environment Advisor (HCC HEA) which required a programme of archaeological work. The site contains the unlisted 19th century Reed Congregational Chapel, built in 1842 and recorded on the Hertfordshire Historic Environment Record (HER 17719). Two large medieval moated sites, both Scheduled as Ancient Monuments are located very close by. SM 20605 lies 10m to the north east and SM 20603 is 30m to the south at Queenbury. The site had a potential for buried remains associated with the post-medieval and medieval settlement core of Reed village, the Chapel and for ancillary elements/features associated with the designated medieval moated sites which lie very close by. No archaeological features. The depth of the made ground deposits (0.87 - 1.20m+) suggests that the archaeological horizon has been truncated. The made ground deposits are likely associated with the construction of the chapel. Made Ground L1002 contained residual medieval (mid 12th - 14th / 15th century), moderately abraded pottery, and Subsoil L1005 contained a sherd of heavily abraded medieval (late 13th - 15th century) pottery. No evidence of burials was revealed.
