Abstract:
Investigating Iron Age settlement in the southern Vale of York, bounded by the Rivers Ouse and Derwent. A desk based assessment covered the wider area around the site to place the project in context. Geophysical survey was undertaken over features previously seen as crop marks in aerial photos. Selected areas were then targeted for excavation to identify features, obtain dating material and determine the nature of the site. All archaeological deposits and cut features were recorded individually on a digital context recording system. Cut features were sectioned to record their depth and profile. All trenches and features were planned. Environmental samples were taken from deposits selected due to their stratigraphic importance or likelihood of containing biological remains. Geophysical survey revealed a number of circular and linear anomalies corresponding to features previously seen as crop marks in aerial photos. Excavation targeted several of the features and showed them to largely be Iron Age or Romano-British round-house ring-ditches and boundaries. A very large quantity of pottery was recovered, along with a number of complete and partial ceramic loom weights. Environmental sampling of several features produced only a small quantity of artefactual and biological remains, but included partially-germinated barley grains typically associated with brewing. Radiocarbon dating of carbonised cereal grains and pottery residues, along with thermoluminescence dating of a pottery sherd, suggest the site was occupied from the later Iron Age through to the first or early second century AD.
