Abstract:
- Field Survey for a proposed gas pipeline between Sproatley (519750E 432670N) and Aldbrough (526700E 436800N) in East Riding of Yorkshire. - Trench Evaluation of two areas on the route of the proposed Sproatley to Aldbrough gas pipeline between 24th May and 6th June 2005. One of the two evaluation areas was north of Humbleton Hall. This area covered 750m of the pipeline route and was targeted because of extensive magnetic anomalies found during the geophysical survey. - Watching Brief in July and August 2005 between Sproatley (NGR:519780 432670) and Aldbrough (525905 436990). Removal of the topsoil from the working width and excavation of the pipe trench were monitored. Overall, the results suggest that the area may have a higher concentration of archaeological remains than was previously thought. In particular, it highlighted the difficulty in locating features in the prevalent alluvial and glacial soils and the limitations of prospecting techniques such as fieldwalking and geophysical surveys in this part of the country.
