Abstract:
Excavations at two sites south of Stagsden took place in advance of construction of the A422 southern bypass in 1991. The two sites investigated both had their origins in the Iron Age and both have evidence of settlement into the Roman period. At east Stagsden the settlement area was initially dominated by roundhouses and pit groups. In the final stages of the Iron Age, kilns were constructed on the site and a single elaborate neonate burial placed in a shallow pit. The site was subsequently levelled but continued to be venerated for several generations into the Roman period. At west Stagsden the earlier Iron Age settlement continued to be occupied on a small scale well into the Roman period. This report not only contains details of the temporal development of the site but has a large illustrated corpus of locally made ceramics closely dated by archaeomagnetic techniques. The latter will make a significant contribution to local ceramic and Iron Age studies of the region.
