An attempt to characterise Bedfordshire in the Iron Age

An aerial photograph suggested the presence of a square-shaped ditched enclosure in an area of new housing development at Manor Way, Flitwick. An initial resistivity survey prior to excavation in advance of building work in 1974 revealed both an irregular sinuous feature cutting the enclosure, considered geological, and a central anomaly to the enclosure. This, a T-shaped corn drying oven, of second-century date, retained traces of an encircling series of small post holes. These, and a central post hole, indicate a covering for the oven, of which a scale model reconstruction was made.

A summary of the detailed parish survey of Farndish

Landscaping of a private garden in Everton and subsequent fieldwalking in the neighbourhood, produced large amounts of pottery of late fourteenth early fifteenth century date. Local geological conditions would favour a kiln site and although none has been found so far, the uniform nature of the pottery and the presence of wasters indicate that one may well have existed here.

Substantial foundations discovered beneath the floor of the church of St Andrew, Ampthill, during building operations in May 1975 confirmed the existence of an earlier, probably Romanesque, structure.
