Abstract:
Greenlane Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at Jack Hill, Allithwaite. Ten evaluation trenches, each c.1.6m-1.7m wide and c.22m long, were located randomly across the area. Following the discovery of a group of Early Bronze Age cremations and associated activity in Trench 1, a further area of approximately 10m by 10m was excavated around them. This was then extended on the south-west side by a further 5m because newly discovered features extended close to the edge of the enlarged area on this side. A further eight features were revealed and excavated. Of the 10 trenches excavated, nine had no features of archaeological interest, although finds, including a small amount of medieval pottery, were retrieved from the topsoil. In Trench 1 a group of three features was revealed. Two of these contained truncated Bronze Age collared urns containing cremations and the third contained charcoal and burnt bone. Following discussion with the Cumbria County Council Historic Environment Service, it was agreed to excavate a larger area 10m by 10m around these features. This revealed a further eight similar features extending towards the south-west edge of the enlarged area, which was then extended a further 5m on this side but no more features were discovered. Of the eight additional features, six contained Bronze Age vessels and the others also contained considerable amounts of charcoal and burnt bone. One pit filled with this type of material contained a complete accessory vessel.
