Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with the construction of a new café within the gardens to the west of Levens Hall, Cumbria. Below the garden soils and gravel paths were deposits and structures, including an extensive deposit of dumped stony material containing large quantities of pottery, tile, and animal bone, a deposit of stony orange clay that may have formed a track or driveway, and walls which delineated part of a driveway leading to the stables. Finds from the earliest deposits were consistently 18th century, a period of rapid development when the estate was under the ownership of James Grahme who is known to have made a number of alterations to the hall. The large number of tile fragments recovered probably relate to rebuilding of the south wing in 1692 and its subsequent repair after a fire in 1703. The other finds represent a mixture of high quality household items, including some relatively exotic pottery, as well as evidence for bone working or tanning. |
