Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at Land Opposite Langdon Road Industrial Estate, Bradworthy, Torridge, Devon. The archaeological evaluation was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Balmond 2022) that was drawn up in consultation with Stephen Reed (DCHET) and in line with best practice. A total of 13 trenches, each measuring c.2m in width and totaling c.340m in length, were laid out using a Topcon GRS-1 GPS and were opened by tracked mechanical excavator using a toothless grading bucket to the depth of in-situ weathered natural. The archaeological evaluation identified a total of 13 features that were largely associated with field systems and with drainage. The majority of the features did not produce dating evidence, with those that did containing post medieval finds at the earliest, and this would suggest that the features were likely to be post medieval to modern agricultural features. The small number of non-drainage related features appeared to reflect the remains of a small agricultural building. A relatively modest assemblage of finds was collected during the archaeological evaluation. This assemblage of finds was comprised of: 64x sherds (418g) of pottery; 2x fragments (11g) of clay pipe; and 13x fragments (124g) of glass. The pottery was largely post medieval to modern in date and it included: Bristol and Staffordshire yellow slipware; North Devon gravel free ware; North Devon gravel tempered ware; industrial ware; stoneware; and white refined earthenware. The majority of the finds were recovered from topsoil contexts, however one of the features did contain archaeological artefacts. The fill (1105) of feature [1104] contained: 1x sherd of North Devon coarseware; 3x sherds of white refined earthenware; 1x clay pipe stem; and 1x iron object. Furthermore, alluvial deposit (205) produced a small assemblage of post medieval pottery. The results of the archaeological evaluation do not justify further archaeological works prior to or in conjunction with the development of the site. |
