Abstract:
Magnetometer survey carried out over c. 2.4ha using a hand-carried GNSS-positioned bespoke fluxgate gradiometer system. Magnitude Surveys Ltd was commissioned to locate and assess the potential for sub-surface archaeological remains over a c. 2.40ha area of land at Walkern Road, Watton-at- Stone, East Hertfordshire. A fluxgate gradiometer survey has been successfully undertaken across the survey area and detected anomalies of anthropogenic, natural and undetermined origin. Probable archaeological anomalies have been identified as a large hengiform feature with a possible entrance and additional ditches in its interior. The anomalies of natural origin, probably caused by variations to the superficial geology, were formed either as bands or spread throughout the survey area. Fragmented anomalies in the centre of the survey area, are of undetermined origin and thus, further investigation is needed. They could either be the result of natural geological variations or additional ditches or enclosures.
