Abstract:
Prior to the submission of a planning application for a proposed campsite at Cartmel, Cumbria, to be located to the south-west of the village and to serve the racecourse, Greenlane Archaeology was commissioned to carry out a desk-based assessment of the site. The history of the area is dominated by the development of Cartmel Priory in the late 12th century and although there has been a considerable amount of archaeological work in Cartmel within the last 10 years much of this has been within the village itself. No archaeological work has been undertaken within the study area. The Historic Environment Record records two sites within the proposed development area: a medieval deer park and a medieval to post-medieval bloomery/forge, though their exact extent and location are uncertain. A derelict post-medieval farmstead and an adjoining gravel pit also lie within the study area c110m outside of the proposed development area to the north-west.
