Abstract:
The assessment was prepared for Devon County Council by Dr Glenn Foard, based upon an MA Dissertation by Alex Hodgkins (2008; University of Leeds). It involved re-examination of primary accounts, examination of historic maps from the 17th to 19th century, aerial photographs held by the National Monuments Record, and data from the Devon Historic Environment Record, Portable Antiquities Scheme and British Geological Survey. The early part of the campaign comprised the battles of Fenny Bridges, Woodbury and Clyst, and the later part culminated in the battle of Sampford Courtenay. 'Battlefield areas' are proposed, within which archaeological evidence of the battles may survive. This is a first stage of investigation, and further survey, sampling and assessment of historic terrain using original sources is needed.
