Abstract: |
A strip, map and record excavation was carried on at Cherry Lea, South Elmsall, West
Yorkshire. The work followed an evaluation which produced evidence for a trackway of Iron
Age or Roman date and later limestone extraction pits. The excavation area focused on the
trackway which terminated within the site. A series of undated pits were also excavated
around the trackway, one of which was much larger and probably represents further evidence
of later limestone extraction. In conclusion, the excavation has produced evidence for the western terminus of a trackway
and part of a wider field system of probable Roman date. The site appears to be on the
periphery of settlements excavated to the south in the recent past. A series of pits of unknown
date were excavated. One larger pit is probably evidence of limestone extraction of a later
period, similar to those excavated elsewhere on the site during the evaluation phase. |
