Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation by trial-trenching was carried out at the site of Clarendon House in Chelmsford in May 2005. This work was carried out in accordance with the Brief and WSI. An archaeological evaluation by trial-trenching was carried out at the site of Clarendon House in Chelmsford in May 2005. Altogether eight evaluation trenches were machine excavated and examined archaeologically. They were evenly spread across the site but paid particular attention to the projected line of Roman defences. The evaluation confirmed the survival of Roman layers (probably of 2nd-century date) and linear features in the eastern part of the site which may be part of the line of the western defensive ditch. The site had been heavily disturbed by former petrol tanks and a 1970s' building (now demolished). |
