Abstract:
Phase 1: Archaeological observation of topsoil stripping to facilitate the laying of hardcore for a hard standing access area Phase 2: Archaeological observation during topsoil stripping along a 'centre-line' measuring approx. 15m wide along the length of the proposed new underground watermain Phase 3: The archaeological observation of the removal of residual topsoil along a ‘centre-line’ trench (Area 2), which measured approximately 1.8m wide, for a length of 310m until the archaeological deposits were seen to peter out. All subsequent hand excavation was undertaken in accordance with the methodology set out in the excavation WSI. In summary, a 10-20% sample of linear features and a 50% sample of discrete features was required. A 20% sample was not taken of all linears as some were more than 100m in length, and were assessed as field boundaries and therefore of low significance. The current project has identified and recorded significant archaeological features and deposits, within the extent of the easement for the water main, located within two arable fields to the south of Ashton Keynes. The remains of a Late Iron Age/Early Roman agricultural landscape, which comprised field boundaries, trackways, and a possible drove road, were present within the Area 1. Although these deposits had been significantly damaged by Modern ploughing, multiple phases of land management were identified in the form of intercutting ditches and ditch re-cuts. A 1st century AD ring gully, which may have represented evidence for a domestic structure, was also present towards the southern end of Area 1. A small amount of Mesolithic and Prehistoric activity was present within Area 1. A single residual Early Mesolithic flint blade was recovered from a tree bole and Prehistoric pottery was recovered from two tree boles and a possible pit. There were numerous undated features and a small assemblage of Post-Roman finds.
