Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation was conducted between November 2007 and April 2008 in the gardens of the house at Stepstile Meadows in preparation for its subsequent extension and the construction of a new swimming pool and underground car park. Three areas were excavated down to formation level or to the archaeological horizon or natural which ever was the highest. Areas 1 and 3, which were excavated in close proximity to the house, contained no archaeology and revealed only either natural geology where the platform or house had removed the topsoil and archaeological horizon or made-ground layers where the ground surface had been raised (Area 3). Similarly, no archaeology was discovered in the northern half of Area 2 save for modern features associated with the pre-existing tennis court, although an extensive layer of flint overlay the natural geological layers of sand and clay. However, the southern half of Area 2 did yield archaeological features and artefacts of Late Iron Age/Early Roman date. |
