Abstract:
Border Archaeology was instructed to carry out an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment with regard to pre-application proposal for conversion of an existing dwelling at No. 43 Haddon Road Sutton Surrey SM1 1RN involving a two-storey side extension and a part-one-, part-two-storey rear extension to provide a two-bed terrace house. Overall Conclusion: The archaeological potential of the site has been assessed in overall terms as Low to Moderate, with particular reference to encountering sub-surface remains of post-medieval date. The potential to encounter remains of Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon date is assessed as Low and as Low to Moderate for the prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval periods. Recommendations: It is Border Archaeology’s considered opinion that, prima facie, the archaeological potential of the site does not present an impediment to the proposed development. Given the Low to Moderate potential of the site in archaeological terms, it is recommended that an appropriate programme of archaeological work, the details of which to be agreed with the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service, will be necessary to determine the extent, depth and significance of buried archaeological features and deposits across the site.
