Abstract:
This report presents the results of a geophysical survey that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) to accompany a planning application for the proposed extension of the existing campsite at Menehay Farm Touring Park, Budock Water, Falmouth, Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with CIfA guidelines (CIfA 2014) and in line with best practice. The geophysical survey followed the guidance that is outlined in: Geophysical Survey in Archaeological Field Evaluation (English Heritage 2008); and Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Geophysical Survey (CIfA 2014). The geophysical survey identified a series of anomalies across the site. The identified anomalies included: linear bank and ditch features; and shallow possible ditch features. The alignment of the features matches various elements of the existing field boundaries which would suggest that the features are likely to reflect earlier phases of the same field system. The geophysical survey also identified some discrete features of unknown date which are likely to reflect modern services and agricultural activity. Several of the identified anomalies are located outside of the site and much of the site will continue to be used as simple tent and touring pitches. A comparison of this geophysical survey with one that was carried out on land to the east of the site, along with the resultant archaeological evaluation trenching, demonstrates that the site is located within a wider prehistoric landscape, with elements of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlement activity which is overlain by medieval and post medieval field systems and enclosures. The results of the geophysical survey and the results of previous archaeological assessments would suggest that the archaeological potential of the site is moderate. It is recommended that a conditioned archaeological watching brief will be required given the likely limited nature of any proposed groundworks.
