Abstract:
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) prior to the installation of a lagoon in the north-eastern corner of a field that lay adjacent to the River Wolf, Broadwoodwidger, West Devon, Devon. The work was carried out in accordance with a written scheme of investigation (Boyd 2022) that was drawn up in consultation with the Devon County Historic Environment Team (DCHET). A square-shaped pit that measured c.2m in width by c.2m in length was excavated by machine and under archaeological supervision to a depth of c.3m in order to locate the line of a water pipe that ran into the River Wolf. This excavation was necessary to ensure that the lagoon, which was to be located c.10m from the boundary in the north-eastern corner of the field, was installed at a sufficient distance from the water pipe. The lagoon was then excavated within a square-shaped area that measured c.20m in width by c.20m in length to a maximum depth of c.0.30m through the topsoil and onto a natural clay. A baulk was left in a central position on a north-east to south-west alignment to allow for slower drainage from one half of the lagoon to the other; it measured c.1.5m in width and it stopped c.2m short of the south-western edge of excavation. The stratigraphy of the site was comprised of: topsoil (100), a mid grey-brown friable silt-clay up to c.0.30m thick; that directly overlay the natural (101), a firm yellow-grey clay. The results of the archaeological monitoring and recording indicated that there were no archaeological deposits present and no archaeological features or artefacts were identified or recovered.
