Abstract: |
Between July and August 2019 Compass Archaeology undertook an archaeological watching brief at Cloister Garth, Abbey Gardens, Chertsey, in the county of Surrey. The watching brief was commissioned following a successful application for the extension works to the present property. The site lies just south and west of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Chertsey Abbey and it is situated within the Runnymede Borough Council designated Area of High Archaeological Potential as well as within the Chertsey Conservation Area. Cloister Garth is a Grade II Listed Building which is thought to date to the 17th century (List Entry Number: 1029207). The watching brief observed the single L-shaped foundation trench for the new extension at the rear of Cloister Garth. The north-east corner of the original cottage was observed (13.86m OD), indicating that Cloister Garth was a single cottage before it was joined with 2 Abbey Gardens. Made ground containing residual medieval finds was recorded, which may have been deposited to level up the ground to the height of the cottage foundation. A layer containing mainly medieval broken peg tiles laid more or less horizontally was observed at 13.66m OD, overlying a possible waterlain deposit indicating the tiles were laid down to consolidate the ground where a medieval water channel, ditch or pond may have been situated. The waterlain deposit appeared to truncate possible natural gravels (13.35m OD). The watching brief observed the single L-shaped foundation trench for the new extension at the rear of Cloister Garth. Several strata were observed below the top and sub soils, including a possible land surface. The uppermost part of this layer may be contemporary to the brick foundation of the north-east corner of the original cottage, which predates the joining of Cloister Garth and 2 Abbey Gardens. This possible land surface may relate to the period of construction of the original cottage due to the overlying presence of crushed brick and mortar fragments. Pottery recovered from context (3) dated to the late 15th century and the CBM was medieval or post-medieval. Since the pottery and some of the CBM predates the 17th century date of Cloister Garth, this layer may have been deposited to infill the ground to the foundation height level, with the earlier pottery and CBM inclusions coming from elsewhere.
A layer of broken peg and floor tiles laid more or less horizontally was observed below the possible land surface. The CBM consisted mainly of peg tile with some floor tile and Reigate Stone, and mostly dated to the medieval period, with some medieval/post-medieval and two post-medieval tiles. The broken tile overlay a possible waterlain deposit of greenish sandy-silt, indicating that the tile was used to consolidate the ground. Context (8) appeared to have truncated the natural gravelly deposit (7) and may have formed a medieval channel, ditch or pond, similar to those visible on 19th century maps in the area. Both contexts (3) and (5) produced evidence of domestic use of the site with fragments of pottery, animal bone, CBM, oyster shell, clay tobacco pipe and metal nails.
A gravelly deposit was only exposed at the base of the southern end of the N-S arm of the trench, which is thought to be a natural deposit. The natural layer was observed at a maximum height of 13.35m. |
