Abstract:
The proposed evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 26 trenches: • 24no. 30m x 1.9m trenches and; • 2no. 15m x 1.9 trenches. The trenches were located to test geophysical anomalies and to provide a representative sample of the remainder of the site. Trench 20 was split in two to avoid a detected buried service and Trench 21 was moved slightly south to avoid the same service. The excavation of Trenches 22 to 26 was not possible, due to landowner requirements for the preservation of these areas at the time of the evaluation. In February and March 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at Folly Lane, Warminster Wiltshire. A total of 21 trenches were excavated. The evaluation identified limited archaeological remains dating to the prehistoric and modern periods. Evidence for prehistoric activity comes from ten worked flints distributed across site and retrieved from topsoil and subsoil deposits, probably representing casual loss over time. The rest of the artefactual assemblage is post-medieval to modern in date. There were three undated features identified: two ditches, likely forming a pre-modern field boundary, and an undated pit.
