Abstract:
Five new test pits were excavated in the basement, and one first excavated in December 2015, was expanded. NaturaL deposits were exposed in four of the pits, and the other two contained a large, previously unrecorded, sewer running east-west centrally within the building. OD heights showed that there had been severe truncation of the natural when the Dreadnought Building was constructed. No archaeological features unrelated to the building's construction were identified. The investigations in the basement showed that the natural topography had been significantly altered within the footprint of the Dreadnought Building itself. The basement was constructed directly into the surface of the Kempton Park Gravels. In the north western corner of the building footprint the test pits exposed very deep foundations constructed for reasons at present unclear - these footings did not reflect sub-basements within the building as postconstruction they were backfilled to basement floor height. In one of instance, within Test Pit D, a natural mid to deep yellow coarse sand was seen at a height of 2.07m OD. No evidence of activity pre-dating the post-medieval period was identified during the monitoring of the site.
