Abstract:
This report details the results of an archaeological watching brief undertaken in St. Mary's Park, Elephant and Castle, London Borough of Southwark by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. This work took place in two phases. Phase 1 involved the reconstruction of a children's playground in the northwest corner of the park. Phase 2 Re-landscaping in the northeast corner of the park, joining with the One The Elephant project to the north of the park. Phase 1 revealed in situ inhumations, layer of cemetery soils, and fragments of the 19th century St. Gabriel's Chapel. Phase 2 featuring 4 pits revealed cemetery soils and fragments of two walls, possibly the boundary wall of the churchyard. Phase 1 took place between 13th January and 23rd March 2015. Phase 2 was monitored in August and September 2016. The watching brief monitored the excavation of foundation pits for playground furniture; together with pits for seating benches; a large soakaway and two test pits. Additionally trenches were excavated for lighting and landscaping took place. Fragments of wall foundations from St. Gabriel's Chapel, built in 1874 and demolished in 1937, were observed. There was no evidence of any activity on the site earlier than the Post-Medieval period. The only in situ burials identified were in the section of the deep soakaway.
