Abstract: |
Archaeology England Ltd was commissioned by Speller Metcalfe Ltd to carry out a Heritage Desk-Based Assessment on 3.7 hectares of land at Stychbrook Park off the A5192 Eastern Avenue, Nether Stowe, Lichfield, Staffordshire. This assessment has been prepared in advance of the submission of detailed proposals for the new Stychbrook Leisure Centre. together with Car parking for 91 cars; sports field; changing facilities; and service yard. The primary objective of this desk-based assessment is to assess the impact of the development proposals on the historic environment, including designated heritage assets. This will help inform future decision making, design solutions and potential mitigation strategies. The aim is to make full and effective use of existing information in establishing the archaeological significance of the site, to elucidate the presence or absence of archaeological material, its character, distribution, extent, condition and relative significance. The assessment site lies in an area where there has been little in the way of archaeological or historical work carried out and that which has, only on a small scale, such as farm or barn surveys. The area has heavy clay soils which may have remained largely wooded until the medieval period when it was gradually cleared. These clearances were likely associated with a dispersed settlement pattern, including several moated sites. Field boundary patterns surviving to be recorded on 19th century maps indicate that the site formed part of an open field system which was gradually enclosed in a piecemeal fashion from the 17th century. The heritage significance and archaeological potential for the site overall is considered to be low. However, further research may alter our understanding of this potential. |
