Abstract: |
Desk Based Assessment: The site is located on the east side of Luneburg Way in Scunthorpe, immediately to the east of the premises of OSI Food Solutions Ltd. The proposed development area currently comprises a levelled green field covering an area of approximately 1.62 hectares. The primary objective of this desk-based assessment is to assess the impact of the development proposals on the historic environment. This will help inform future decision making, design solutions and potential mitigation strategies. The aim is to make full and effective use of existing information in establishing the archaeological significance of the site, to elucidate the presence or absence of archaeological material, its character, distribution, extent, condition and relative significance. Watching Brief: The watching brief consisted of the excavation of two trenches within the proposed development area. The first trench comprised the excavation of a ditch and creation of an associated bank to aid surface water drainage to the west of the proposed solar panels. The second trench comprised the excavation of an electrical services trench. DBA: There are no designated heritage assets within a 500m radius that can be impacted either directly or indirectly by the proposed development. No known archaeological features exist in the immediate development area, apart from an unrecorded 19th century field boundary ditch. This is also supported by further evidence of activity from these periods within 1km of the site. The development is in the pre-planning consultation stage and no firm plans for the development of the site have been produced. Nevertheless, a general archaeological potential for Prehistoric, Saxon and WWII period activity has been highlighted in this area. It may be appropriate therefore that an archaeological watching brief is maintained on ground-breaking activity. WB: The watching brief focused on monitoring two trenches located within the development boundary. All excavated areas highlighted that redeposited material was present in all locations subject to groundworks. Following the completion of the watching brief it was determined that no further archaeological monitoring works were required. |
