Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development on land at 2 Satchfield Crescent, Henbury, Bristol. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2020) that was drawn up in consultation with Bristol City Council (BCC). A large portion of the site was obstructed/covered in piles of spoil and debris, some of which appeared to relate to the demolition of the garages that previously occupied a part of the site, whilst two trailers were present in the northern portion of the site. This constrained the locations of the trenches and this resulted in a smaller representative sample of the site. That being said, the excavated area showed a total lack of archaeological potential. The trenches were opened by a tracked mechanical excavator that was fitted with a toothless grading bucket, with the trenches positioned so as to acquire a representative sample of the site. A total of four trenches were present within the survey area, although Trench 04 was opened prior to the site visit; it was partially dug into the natural bedrock and it contained modern debris/rubbish. As a result, Trench 04 wasn’t recorded but it was photographed. Trench 01 contained topsoil and subsoil and this was present across the southern portion of the site. Trench 02 and Trench 03 covered an area of made ground that mostly comprised of gravelly deposits of modern date and that overlay a thin clayey layer and the natural bedrock. Some material from the demolition of the garages that previously occupied a part of the site was present across the site and was evident at the south-western extent of Trench 03. This hardcore and broken concrete layer was likely partly in-situ and it appeared approximately where the garages once stood. |
