Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out to investigate the structural condition of the east wall of the Abbey Precinct, Leicester Abbey. The evaluation consisted of one evaluation trench within the precinct, and two test pits against external buttresses. The evaluation trench revealed the medieval precinct wall to a depth of 2.0m BGL. Intact medieval deposits were encountered at 1.86m BGL, indicating that this length of wall was originally free-standing, with the lower portion cut into the natural slope of the riverbank. Deposits overlying the medieval horizon included residual material relating to medieval monastic buildings (lead cames, glazed roof and floor tiles, and architectural stone fragments), and also included a late 19th-20th C bottle stop. These deposits relate to levelling of the site and reworking of soil during use of the site as a nursery. The test pits shoed that the east wall had been refaced during the late 19th to early 20th C. In test pit 1, a buttress had been built prior to refacing, while in test pit 2 the wall had been refaced prior to the construction of a buttress.
