Abstract: |
Detailed magnetometry was carried out by Archaeological Surveys Ltd over 1.8ha on land to the north of Wick Farm Cottage, Heddington Wick, Wiltshire, ahead of the development of a proposed outdoor horse arena in the south eastern corner of a field. The survey was conducted using a 5 channel, cart-based system with the sensors spaced 0.5m apart with data recorded at 20Hz. A number of anomalies of archaeological origin were located but these are mainly confined to the northern edge of the site and include a number of linear ditches associated with a Roman road and further ditches, enclosures and pits and areas of burning. Further south there are two parallel linear anomalies that may have had some truncation by ridge and furrow, but their origin is uncertain. Within the development area, in the south eastern part of the site, there is evidence for ground make-up but a lack of any other clearly defined anomalies that can be defined as having archaeological potential. |
