Abstract:
Trial trench evaluation and excavation of 31 trenches throughout seven fields Archaeological deposits comprising of ditches, furrows and potential plough scars into the natural subsoil were present in trenches 2, 11, 16 and 29. These indicate the medieval/ post med occupation of agriculture within the site and its early occupation in an agricultural setting before the coal mine. In addition to this Trenches 4, 12, 19, 25, 26, 27 and 28 presented evidence for modern disturbance relating to historic opencast mining were recorded.
