Abstract: |
Greenlane Archaeology carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment prior to potential alterations to Town Head, Windermere. Town Head is first recorded in 1675, evidently as a farm. It passed through various families during the 18th century, principally the Taylors, and was acquired in 1803 by William Townley of Rochdale for £7,000. He soon made a number of additions and a detailed specification drawn up by the builder, William Elleray, gives a good impression of what was added at this time. It reached its present form during the early 19th century and the road along the east side of Lake Windermere was moved to the east to bypass Town Head between 1807 and 1850. The gardens were also remodelled in the late 19th century. The line of the old road and other earthworks of possible archaeological interest are visible in the available Lidar imagery for the area. |
