Abstract:
ECUS archaeology was commissioned by the North Pennines AONB Partnership to undertake a programme of desk- and field-based archaeological survey of three sites (Catlin, Warcop and Wemmergill) in Cumbria and County Durham. Catlin: the desk- and field-based survey identified 106 heritage assets or asset groups. 30 have been previously recorded in HER. Most are related to post-Medieval mining activities or farming. Wemmergill: the desk- and field-based survey identified 19 features or feature groups. 8 have been previously recorded in HER. The features range in date from the prehistoric to relatively modern periods and comprise findspots, mining activities, structures and cairns. Warcop: the desk- and field-based survey identified 9 features or feature groups. 5 have been previously recorded in HER. The features range in date from prehistoric to post-Medieval periods and comprise a series of cairns, earthworks, structures and an extraction site. Large part of the land is used by MOD which limited the survey area.
